Cornell Co-Operative Extension of Tompkins County had hired JKDA to design and plan for their office expansion. An existing building will be demolished for new parking spaces. JKDA will utilize shipping containers that will sit on a system of piles and beams. This allows CCE employees to utilize parking underneath the offices. This project will be completed in many phases.
The first phase is to gain additional storage. There will be four twenty foot containers situated on an existing concrete pad totaling 292 SF of conditioned space and 308 SF of unconditioned space. The use of this storage will continue to be mixed use community service organization occupied by its owners and business tenants.
The second phase will be to demolish the AAA building (2754 SF) to gain additional parking spaces.
The third phase will consist of adding twenty-four forty foot containers situated over the existing parking lot. The gross area of the offices is 12, 521 SF, with the renovation of the existing entry atrium of 1,382 SF. There will be a 2-story greenhouse for the usage of early concepts of vertical gardening referencing the works of Ravindra Krishnamurthy’s A-frame which is a system that consists of rotating tiers of plant shelving to gain the same amount of the sunlight for each tier. The client is also interested in using innovative materials other than steel and glass for the greenhouse. The product that they which to explore is called ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluorethylene) film; a highly durable, transparent, and lightweight in comparison to glass structures. The use of the offices will also continue to be mixed use community service organization occupied by its owners and business tenants. The greenhouse will be a teaching greenhouse to serve the general public. There is also planning to have a test café located adjacent to the existing commercial kitchen. This would allow members of the community to come and test their products for a via business opportunity venture.
