The owners of the Inn at Taughannock Falls approached JDKA with a unique design opportunity in 2016. The goal was to revitalize the property into a premier events venue. Aside from various improvements to the Victorian inn, the main project was the development of a special events space. Various incarnations were explored and vetted with the result being dubbed “Enchantment,” an outdoor event space for up to 300 people, with a primary focus of weddings. The design work included a substantial retaining wall to level the sloping site, a subterranean suport building, a large 60′ x 100′ tent patio, and an array of landscape features. The latter includes a grand stair leading down to Enchantment (aka, the wedding garden) that boasts multiple fire pits and patios with the seasonal tent patio anchoring the site. One fire pit is cantilevered over the edge of the retaining wall, reaching out toward Cayuga Lake. A massive outdoor fireplace and patio punctuates one end of the tent. The architectural collaboration with the owner was the key to the success of the design. The outcome of many years of hard work is that of drama and whimsy for all to enjoy.
